KIGALI, Rwanda – Pahayagan has committed to strengthening its coverage of women and youth political leaders after participating in the Media Seminar on Advancing the Transformation of Gender Social Norms to Enhance Women and Youth Participation and Representation in Leadership and Decision-Making, held in Kigali, Rwanda, from June 30 to July 2, 2026.
Around 50 media practitioners from Africa and Asia attended the seminar to address the underrepresentation of women in parliaments and governments. Participants discussed how women leaders are often unfairly generalized as domestic individuals and subjected to rigid gender stereotypes compared to their male counterparts.
“We are challenging all journalist and media practitioners as they are responsible in democracy building especially in terms of inclusiveness and representation and participation and that should be reflected in the voices that are consulted and voices that are setting opinions. We have reports across the world that only 26% of media coverage across the world are about women,” said Rumbidzai Kandawasavika – Nhundu, Principal Adviser, Democracy and Inclusion of International IDEA.
Pahayagan Editor Domsy Ramos, representing the Philippines, expressed a strong commitment to consistently producing insightful and relevant stories about the issues hounding the women’s sector, and to actively pursuing the advancement of their participation in the democratic process.
