GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines — At least seven people have been confirmed dead, seven remain missing, and 134 others were injured following the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Sarangani Province and nearby areas on Monday, June 8.

The General Santos City Public Information Office reported the casualty figures as emergency response teams continue search-and-rescue operations across affected communities. Authorities said the numbers are still being verified due to ongoing strong aftershocks and limited access to some damaged areas.

Officials warned that the situation remains fluid as rescue workers race against time to locate survivors possibly trapped in collapsed structures. Hospitals in the city have been placed on high alert as medical teams treat the injured, many of whom sustained trauma-related and crush injuries.

The earthquake caused widespread shaking across Mindanao, with General Santos City among the hardest hit. Structural damage to buildings, commercial establishments, and residential areas has been reported, though full assessments are still underway.

Disaster response agencies continue to coordinate relief operations while also monitoring aftershock activity, which has further complicated rescue efforts and raised safety concerns for both survivors and responders.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid damaged structures, and follow official advisories as assessments and rescue missions continue.
